Painted live during Unstaged, Market Street Arts presents Build Up Your Mind by Malik Seneferu.

At the corner of Sixth and Market, painted live during the Unstaged, this mural is part of the series From the Hill and Beyond—a living archive of ancestral knowledge, cultural resilience, and urban futurism rooted in San Francisco.

Set in conversation with the nearby Frontier Tower, a modern-day build-up lab of the tech boom, this piece visually connects the city’s rapid innovation with the deeper, often overlooked contributions of Black San Franciscans. A bold profile emerges on the left, its neural pathways rendered as orange circuitry, symbolizing the unbroken flow of thought, memory, and invention.

The mural’s black and orange palette pays tribute to the San Francisco Giants, the only major sports team to remain loyal to the city—a visual and cultural nod to the giant minds of Black San Franciscans who have carried the city through transformation after transformation.

At the heart of the mural is the phrase “Build up your mind”—an invocation to nurture imagination, self-determination, and creative courage in the face of displacement and digital erasure.

And hidden in plain sight, along Sixth Street, another message is etched in orange: “REMAIN CREATIVE.”

A whispered affirmation. A personal mantra. A public charge.

This mural is a meditation on survival, legacy, and vision in the very circuits of the city.
